A younger sibling to Nahraht, the first Horta to enter Starfleet, Nirathi was one of the 20 Horta sent to Bajor in an effort to locate new mineral resources for the Bajorans after the Cardassian occupation.  The Cardassians kidnapped the mother Horta but through Commander Sisko’s brilliant handling of the situation, she was rescued.  This so impressed young Nirathi that he joined Starfleet Academy when his mining tour on Bajor was completed.  After graduation, Nirathi was assigned to the USS Maximillian.  A specialist in Xenobiology, he is conducting an extensive study of the phenomena of non-silicone based life forms throughout the galaxy.  He enjoys sampling an amazing array of minerals from alien worlds, which he describes as “take out food”

After Commander Jaydin left the Maximillian to return to Bajor, Nirathi was elevated to First Officer, and soon after the events of “Order of the Sword”, Captain.
