Kitana Rowan was born to Ori and Rion Rowan on Trill.  Her childhood was spent taking things apart and putting them back together, sometimes better than before.  With her parents prodding, she entered the Trials to become a Trill host at the age of fifteen.  When she was nineteen, she was accepted as a host and soon joined to the symbiont known as Xan.  To help Kitana with the disorientation that normally follows joining, her parents took her to Deep Space Five.  It was there that she realized that she wanted to join Starfleet .  Kitana Xan did well in the Academy and graduated in the top of her class.  She was assigned to the USS Cortana (Akira class) and there she learned to work well in high stress situations.  While aboard, the Dominion War began, and Kitana watched first hand as many of her friends and fellow officers lost their lives in the ever increasing battles the Cortana found itself in.  The ship was on the front lines for most of the war and Kitana rose through the ranks quickly as she proved herself time and again.  When the war was over, Kitana needed a change.  Most of the original crew of the Cortana were now dead and it was hard for her to face her demons.  She requested a transfer and was assigned to the Communications corps of the USS Maximillian where she currently serves.
