Class-M world in the Menkare Expanse beyond the constellation Leo, and similar to Earth in enviornment.  Kafre Prime is also one of the few Class-M worlds in the galaxy with an elaborate ring system similar to that of Saturn in the Sol system.  Kafre Prime is the third of ten planets orbiting the larger G2 star in a binary star system.  Kafre Prime has three moons, each long since settled by the Kafreans.  Scientists have always been baffled about this rare planetary formation.  The civilization at Kafre Prime is an advanced race of humanoids, believed by Admiral Kilgore to have once been a major spacefaring race.  It is believed that the Kafreans had once set up an outpost on planet Earth over ten thousand years ago, forming the basis of the ancient Egyptian civilization in the Nile river valley, possibly even the mythical civilization of Atlantis.

     Twenty thousand Earth years ago, the Kafrean people explored the galaxy, discovering planet Earth.  They established two colonies on that world, one on a continent no longer existing, the other in what would later be known as the Nile river valley.  In those days, the Nile was lush and fertile, and the Kafrean colonists encountered primitive indigenous hunter-gatherer tribes in the area and educated them in the skills of astronomy, agriculture, and medicine.  The primitive humands lived among the Kafrean colonists, and flourished.

     About ten thousand years ago, the climate on Earth changed drastically due to an experiment conducted by the Kafreans which ended with disasterous results.  To the Kafreans, Earth was too cold and inhospitable.  The scientists on the colony of Atlantis began their work on warming the climate, but something went wrong resulting in the total obliteration of their subcontinent, and the drastic climate change.  The lush savannah surrounding the river Nile changed almost overnight into desert, forcing the Kafreans to leave, and civilization on Earth to die for the next five thousand years.

     Though the Kafrean civilization is roughly equivalent to that of contemporary Federation society, space exploration is no longer a major endeavour for the Kafreans.  During Kilgore's initial exploratory effort in the Menkare Expanse, the Kafreans, who see Earth humans as their ancient brothers, had agreed to allow the Starfleet exploratory fleet to use their world as a supply outpost and command hub for coordinating Starfleet's efforts in the area.  Kafre Prime, by the time of the Maximillian's arrival, is located on the edge of known space in the Menkare Expanse, two-thirds remaining unexplored beyond this system.  

AUTHOR'S NOTE: Kafre Prime was named for the second pharaoh of the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom of Egypt, Kafre.  He is credited for building the second Great Pyramid at the Giza Plateau outside Cairo.
